WIN Founder Lana Hempsall has written in ConHome that Labour’s Welfare Reform Bill is falling short of meaningful change, with minor administrative tweaks provoking revolt among MPs and leaving the bulk of the £100 billion disability budget untouched. She argues that the system is unsustainable, with rising claims for Personal Independence Payments, particularly for mental health conditions, while those with the severest disabilities receive inadequate support. Lana concludes that Britain urgently needs a welfare system that differentiates between permanent and minor conditions, focuses on capability rather than incapacity, restores the link between work and reward, and ensures resources are targeted to those who truly need them.
