WIN Founder Lana Hempsall has written in The Spectator about how Motability has expanded far beyond its original remit. She argues that loosened government eligibility criteria have turned the scheme into a mass car-leasing operation, one in five new cars sold in Britain, raising serious questions about whether taxpayers are subsidising vehicles for people who do not truly need them. Lana concludes that Motability must either be tightly regulated as a public service focused on the most severely disabled, or operate as a business without vast public subsidy, but cannot continue as both.
