WIN Founder Lana Hempsall has written in CapX that Britain’s welfare system has become an anchor rather than a springboard, trapping millions in long-term dependency, particularly those with minor or treatable conditions, while leaving too little support for people with the most severe disabilities. She argues that despite the Government’s early steps, rising PIP caseloads and costs show the reforms barely scratch the surface, with mental-health-related claims now dominating and encouraging people away from work rather than towards it. Lana concludes that only a fundamental reset, clearly distinguishing between severe and minor conditions, shifting assessments, strengthening treatment and work support, and restoring incentives to work, will create a fair and sustainable welfare system that aligns with Britain’s values of effort, aspiration and independence.
