WIN Founder Lana Hempsall has written in ConHome that Labour faces a serious challenge in reforming Britain’s welfare system, with previous attempts to reduce the £100 billion disability budget watered down or abandoned under pressure from backbench MPs and campaign groups. She notes that while the new Secretary of State, Pat McFadden, has signalled the need for reform, including reshaping Personal Independence Payments to exclude minor mental health conditions and strengthening employment support, these changes are delayed until the Stephen Timms Review concludes in late 2026. Lana concludes that decisive action is urgently needed to reduce dependency, redirect support toward treatment rather than benefits, and ensure the system is sustainable for both taxpayers and those with genuine need.
